What are kidney stones?
The primary function of your kidneys is to remove waste and fluid from your blood, which is then expelled in the form of urine. When this waste, namely calcium, oxalate and uric acid begins to build up, it can form into hard deposits that can lodge themselves in your urinary tract, causing considerable and debilitating pain.
What causes kidney stones?
The primary reason kidney stones develop is due to dehydration, along with excessive calcium, protein, and other minerals in your bloodstream. Dehydration reduces the body’s ability to flush these things from your body, allowing them to stick together into grains or stones that are too big to comfortably pass from your body.
You can have kidney stones and be unaware of their presence. If these stones grow in size, however, they make themselves painfully known as they make their way through your urinary tract.
