High blood pressure means that your blood is exerting too much pressure on your arterial walls. To determine this, your Chesapeake Wellness Center provider simply and painlessly measures your blood pressure through several complete cycles of your heartbeat. The systolic, or top number, measures the force on your arterial walls during the pumping phase of your heartbeat. The diastolic, or bottom number, measures the pressure in your arteries between heartbeats. The resulting numbers then fall into one of the following categories.
- Normal
- Elevated
- Hypertension 1
- Hypertension 2
With higher blood pressure numbers, your arteries are under extreme stress, which can lead to serious cardiovascular issues, including heart attack and stroke.
